Biohacking seems to be the buzzword of the day for the health and wellness fanatics and it appears to cover a wide spectrum of extremes. From Brian Johnson, former founder of Braintree which acquired Venmo and sold to PayPal (he's loaded 🤑), who is on a mission to "not die", to Madonna's quest for eternal youth (also loaded), to the need not biohackers like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, it is rampant and only the beginning with estimates that the biohacking market value will grow to upwards of $159B by 2033 at an annual growth rate of 20+%.

What is Biohacking?

Biohacking is taking what your mama gave you and monitoring, leveraging, optimizing, and even embellishing. It can involve anything from simple lifestyle swaps, cold showers, and supplementation to infrared home installations, moderately expensive non-invasive therapies, and outlandishly expensive invasive alterations. It's our modern-day nomenclature for the "fountain of youth." For reasonably healthy humans, longer lifespans seem to be a realistic expectation, hence the desire to hack the aging process to look, feel, and be more biologically youthful.

Who is Doing It?

Well, there's Bryan Johnson, who has a company called Blueprint and is the test subject for the company on a quest to "not die" – yes, he's flipped the middle on mortality. As the most measured man alive, he has a team of scientists, medical practitioners, and all the experts you can buy at your disposal. Most recently, he received a plasma infusion from his 17-year old son. He literally had his son's young blood infused into his body to improve his health. Hopefully his son got a good allowance for that. Not just biohackers, a number of world renown anti-aging scientists and doctors are doing biohacks including Dr. David Sinclair, a Harvard Medical School professor who studies aging. Some celebrities have jumped into the biohacking club as well: Hailey Bieber (cryo facials and IV drips), Madonna (hyperbaric oxygen therapy and stem cell treatments), Tom Brady and LeBron James (compression therapy, IV drips), and Kendall Jenner (cryotherapy and infrared saunas). For those of us who aren't loaded, a few of these hacks we can still get in on:

The Sleep Hack

Sleep is THE most underrated biohack. Not only is it free, but it is perhaps the most critical function of the human body for optimal health. Sleep is the time our bodies do their most critical repair and recovery work. Our bodies need 7-9 hours of quality sleep for optimal functioning. Sleep deprivation is linked to metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, cognitive decline, and mental health disorders. Poor sleep quality (not just duration) is a significant risk factor for early mortality. On the flip side, quality sleep optimizes: brain function and mental clarity, hormone balance, immune function, athletic performance and muscle recovery, emotional regulation, and metabolic rate.

All of the biohacking tools at our disposal (cold plunges, light therapy, supplements) are essentially mimicking what good sleep already does naturally and for free. So if you aren't sleeping well, fixing that is your #1 biohack. Optimize your sleep: reduce blue light exposure before bed, keep a consistent sleep schedule, cool your room to 65–68°F, limit alcohol and caffeine, and consider magnesium glycinate or L-theanine as sleep-supporting supplements.

The Cold Hack

Cold exposure is the most accessible biohack after sleep. It ranges from a free cold shower to expensive cold plunge tubs. The evidence supporting cold exposure for health is growing: it's been shown to reduce inflammation, improve mood, boost metabolism, enhance immune function, and support mental resilience. Even a 2-3 minute cold shower provides meaningful benefit. Work up to it gradually and notice the mental and physical shift.

The Light Hack

Light is one of the most powerful tools for regulating your circadian rhythm, mood, and energy. Morning sunlight (within 30-60 minutes of waking) sets your cortisol peak for the day, improving alertness and ensuring better sleep at night. Evening red light or infrared light exposure has been shown to reduce inflammation, improve skin health, and support cellular repair. Both are free or low-cost hacks with substantial evidence behind them.

The Movement Hack

Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)—the calories burned outside of formal exercise—may be more important than your gym time for metabolic health. Walking is the most underrated form of movement: 7,000–10,000 steps daily has been linked to significantly reduced all-cause mortality. Walking after meals specifically blunts blood sugar spikes. Add standing breaks, walking meetings, and stairs wherever possible. It's free, sustainable, and extraordinarily effective.

The Supplement Hack

A few evidence-based supplements are worth considering for most adults: magnesium glycinate (sleep, stress, muscle recovery), vitamin D3 + K2 (immune function, bone health, mood), omega-3 fish oil (inflammation, brain health, cardiovascular protection), and creatine (muscle strength, cognitive function). These are low-cost, widely researched, and appropriate for most people. Always check with your doctor before adding new supplements.

Here's what I'm NOT doing: I am not comparing myself to Bryan Johnson or the celebrities' antics. Rather, I'm giving you the hacks I'm trying and liking because as far as I can tell what's working for others seems to be pretty good anecdotal evidence and reason enough to try a few low-cost healthful hacks. We all want to look and feel our best as we continue to enjoy life, and with that as the quest, I'm all in on biohacking as an ongoing and pretty fun experiment!

Are you biohacking? What is your motivation to biohack? What hacks do you love? Any you hate?

Here's to life less toxic and more youthful!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is biohacking and do I need a lot of money to do it?

Biohacking is intentionally optimizing your biology—sleep, movement, light exposure, nutrition, and supplementation—to improve how you look, feel, and age. Most of the most effective biohacks are free or nearly free: quality sleep, cold showers, morning sunlight, walking, and a few targeted supplements. You don’t need Bryan Johnson's budget to see real results.

What is the most important biohack for overall health?

Sleep. It’s free, it’s foundational, and no other intervention—cold plunge, red light, supplement—can fully compensate for poor sleep. Seven to nine hours of quality sleep regulates hormones, repairs tissue, clears the brain, supports immune function, and drives metabolic health. Optimize sleep first before adding any other biohack.

Does cold exposure actually work for health and wellness?

Yes, with growing evidence. Cold exposure—even a 2–3 minute cold shower—triggers norepinephrine release, reduces inflammation, boosts mood, and improves metabolic rate. It also builds mental resilience. You don’t need an expensive cold plunge tub to benefit; a cold shower provides meaningful physiological effects at zero cost.

What supplements are worth taking for longevity and performance?

The most evidence-backed supplements for most adults are magnesium glycinate (sleep, stress, muscle recovery), vitamin D3 with K2 (immune and bone health), omega-3 fish oil (inflammation and brain health), and creatine (muscle strength and cognitive function). These are low-cost, well-researched, and broadly beneficial—though always check with a doctor before starting.

How much walking do you need to improve health?

Research links 7,000–10,000 steps daily to significantly reduced all-cause mortality, improved cardiovascular health, and better metabolic function. A 10–20 minute walk after meals specifically reduces blood sugar spikes. Walking is one of the most underrated and underused health interventions—free, accessible, and extraordinarily effective when done consistently.
