- Less villainous than the internet believes and less harmless than formulators claim. High in a leave-on it's genuinely drying and barrier-disruptive; low down an ingredient list in a serum or an extract, it's doing a job and it's fine. Fatty alcohols, cetyl, cetearyl, stearyl, are a completely different thing and are not drying at all.
